Dekalb County Schools

First DCSD COVID019 Case

MEMORANDUM
To: DeKalb County School District Employees, Parents, Community Stakeholders
From: Ramona Tyson, Interim Superintendent
Subject: COVID-19 Exposure
Date: March 23, 2020

Today, March 23, 2020, the DeKalb County Board of Health (DBOH) notified the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) of its first confirmed case of COVID-19. However, in this case, there is no exposure to students.

The DBOH is communicating directly with the employee and investigating to determine if there was close contact between the staff member who tested positive and other employees. Per guidance from health officials, the identity of the employee must be kept confidential, but we can disclose that the employee did not work at a school. The DBOH explained that the biggest intervention that DeKalb County School District could have done has already taken place- all schools are closed. Since the district closed all schools on March 16th, teams have been cleaning and sanitizing each of our schools and centers. All employees are encouraged to continue adhering to health protocols provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Public Health to stop the spread of COVID-19:

• Practice Social Distancing by avoiding mass gatherings, avoiding crowded places, and maintaining distance (at least 6ft.) from others when possible. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. IF soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Please seek medical attention if you or a family member feels ill or is exhibiting flu-like symptoms.

Health officials continue to remind us that persons who are a-symptomatic should self-quarantine for 14 days. Those who are showing symptoms should contact their primary care physician for guidance immediately.

www.dekalbschoolsga.org The safety and well-being of our staff and students continues to be a top priority. The building in which the employee worked has been closed. The building is being deep cleaned and sanitized. As we continue to navigate these uncharted waters, we remain committed to providing accurate and timely information by updating our DCSD website (www.dekalbschoolsga.org) as information is received.
